Metal and Tool Trade (Pty) Ltd (MTT) was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the M.J.C. Niemann Group of Companies (NIEMET), Europe’s leading stockist and dealer of non-ferrous semi-finished products, and Volker Schütte. From its beginnings in Johannesburg, MTT has grown into South Africa’s leading importer and distributor of aluminium, copper, brass, bronze, stainless steel, and titanium.
With headquarters and a warehouse in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, and further presence in Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal, we maintain a wide range of standard and customer-specific stock items. Through our Service Center, we also offer aluminium products cut-to-size and machining services – ensuring fast, tailored delivery across South Africa.
MTT’s story began over 40 years ago, when NIEMET supported a major marine project for the South African Navy. The project highlighted a gap in the local market: South African industries required reliable access to imported non-ferrous metals, also needing stock kept locally, payment in local currency, and simplified logistics.
In 1985, Volker Schütte partnered with NIEMET to establish MTT in Johannesburg, building a local supply base for semi-finished non-ferrous metals. What started as a small sales office quickly developed into a nationwide supplier. Today, MTT is proud of its heritage and continues to combine German precision with South African market expertise – a partnership that remains at the heart of our business.
